This series of images are dedicated to my old friend and ‘twin’ Mathew Barry. Matty and I shared our birthdays on the exact day down to the year and almost an hour apart – he in the UK and I in Singapore. We were like brother and sister. On 1 August 2013, Matty left our world, hopefully for a better one. It is not easy to articulate the pain, shock and grief I went through. At the same time, it was a busy time as well and I had to swing from one extreme of emotion to the next. I miss Matty. There are reminders of him on Facebook because he beat me at all the silly games we enjoyed playing. RIP Twinx.

Running is a difficult sport, one that doesn’t get enough credit most of the time. There’s always a reason to quit: muscles scream pain, air can’t find the lungs, the distance too far to overcome. But what the people of Boston showed is that we must never stop running. Together, we will always cross the finish line.

Good will always triumph evil.
The bad guy must lose.
We must never quit fighting.
These truths self-evident need reminding following the sobering tragedy in Boston, when two explosives detonated in quick succession near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday. At least 144 people were injured and three killed, including an 8-year-old, according to the Boston Globe.
Catastrophes like this one seem to have become normal in our lives during this modern era, as the shootings at the Aurora, Col. movie theater, the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting and this attack at the Boston Marathon all have happened within the past year, their occurrence seemingly as routine as the changing of seasons. These attacks are intentionally insidious, hurting its victims and us as a nation as much psychologically as they have physiologically. All these places slightly tarnished: A movie theater, a haven of entertainment and relaxation; a school, a microcosm of growth and protection; and now one of the oldest sporting events in America, a race of determination and perseverance, ended by explosions before some could even cross the finish line.
Those that saw the end ever approaching as the clock read 4:09:43 when that first, fiery bomb detonated, were not the elite runners; they were not the ones who ran for money or glory. They ran for the satisfaction of completing a feat so great few even attempt it. True to the American spirit, they raced to overcome an obstacle, to prove to everyone the impossible is accomplishable. They were those not of strong legs, but of powerful hearts.
Sports should do that: Bring us together to reflect the courage of the human spirit, not drive us apart by the cruelty capable of man. I think of Florida State football games, regardless of what’s happening in our lives, and how they unite this town together with a bond irreplaceable. We dress in war paint, celebrate and be merry with friends and family and all root for one, common goal. It is our Boston Marathon in a way, sacred to us in a way only we can understand. My heart weeps for those in Boston, who had that taken away from them Monday as this black smog hangs above their event which should only bring joy.
These tragedies alter our perceptions; our world shades darker, we feel more alone, the temperature in the room drops a few degrees. But among the dark clouds which fly overhead, there is always a silver lining.
During these truly awful times, I remind myself of a quote, one that seems silly some days, but felt essential yesterday.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,’” Mr. Rogers said.
And I did. I found common people leap the barrier between street and sidewalk following the first explosion, attempting to offer any help they could. I found a cop saving a child, fleeing the danger with the child in his arms. I found so many people donating blood, that Red Cross informed people they didn’t need any more donations. I found the people of Boston offer their homes to everyone they could, writing contact info on a Google Word document. I found restaurants provide free food. I found even a corporate giant like Google create technology so people could find or alert loved ones of their location. Most of all, I found people prove good humans will always outnumber bad ones, and we will always triumph over them.
Running is a difficult sport, one that doesn’t get enough credit most of the time. There’s always a reason to quit: muscles scream pain, air can’t find the lungs, the distance too far to overcome. But what the people of Boston showed is that we must never stop running. Together, we will always cross the finish line.

"Zen" means "to think about anything" and "arrive at the contemplation of". The purpose of the mini-garden of Zen is to give you the "feeling of the moment", freeing up mind from life’s fleeting domestic troubles.
According to Eastern philosophy Buddhism, Zen Garden is quintessence symbolizes the excitement and serenity that can give a sense of grandeur to the practicing and the balance through the contemplation of stones and sculptures.
It is believed that Zen meditation promotes relaxation and as explained in the modern world – fleeting. Your movements become serene, freeing the mind, giving inspiration and creativity. When contemplating a mini-garden of Zen it is possible to feel a new kind of relaxation that allows you to draw upon the harmony and splendor – and in his heart and in mind.

…..item 3a)…. Nick of Time (The Twilight Zone) …
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia … en.wikipedia.org/
"Nick of Time" is an episode of the American television anthology series The Twilight Zone.
Episode no.Season 2
Episode 43
Original air date November 18, 1960
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_of_Time_(The_Twilight_Zone)
Plot
When Don and Pat Carter’s automobile breaks down in Ridgeview, Ohio, they decide to have lunch at the Busy Bee Cafe while they wait. The booth they sit in has a fortune telling machine on the table that answers yes or no questions for a penny each. Don asks the "mystic seer" if he is going to get a promotion at work. The card says that it has been decided in his favor. When Don calls the office, he discovers that the seer was right. Because of this initial success, Don asks the seer more and more questions.
Pat begins to recognize that Don is taking the seer too seriously. Based on the seer’s predictions, Don believes it is unsafe to leave the diner until after 3 p.m. Pat convinces him to leave a few minutes before 3, but the couple is almost struck by a car while crossing the street. A nearby clock shows it is 3 p.m. After they calm down, Don wants to go back to the cafe for more answers. However, two women are sitting at their booth, so Don and Pat wait at the front counter.
Pat wants proof that the seer is legitimate, pointing out that it was Don who had brought up the matter of precisely 3 p.m. After reclaiming their booth, Don immediately asks the seer more questions. One of the things he wants to know is whether their car will be fixed by the end of the day. The seer answers in the affirmative, and, as if on cue, the mechanic steps into the diner to tell Don that his car is fixed.
The breaking point comes when Don wants the seer to tell him where they’re going to live and asks the seer every conceivable yes/no question to arrive at that information. Pat tries to break the spell the seer has over Don. After a persuasive speech from Pat, Don apologizes and then announces directly to the mystic seer that they’re leaving to go do what they please. After their cautious but uneventful exit to their car and out of town, a slightly older couple enters the diner. The couple is noticeably beleaguered and distraught. Approaching the same mystic seer, the man first asks the seer if they can ask more questions. After receiving an apparently affirmative answer, the man asks a series of questions including, "Do you think we might leave Ridgeview today?" The couple is obviously deflated by the answers to this question and others and, unlike the now free Don and Pat, will remain trapped by their obsession to the seer’s "counsel."

‘Every asset of the commonwealth of Massachusetts and the federal government is either here or coming here,’ he added.
CBS reported that Rep. Bill Keating confirmed there were two unexploded devices found – one at a hotel in Copley Square and another at an undisclosed location, possibly beneath bleachers.
In an interview with ABC, former police chief Bill Bratton said that as well as the chaos from the injuries, ‘you have the compounding factor of dealing with unidentified packages’.
He said he expected police to be receiving numerous calls from concerned residents, as there were reports that as many as three hotels were being evacuated as a precaution.
ABC News reported that there were at least three reported packages, with one controlled explosion having been carried out.
‘You have to investigate them all,’ he said. ‘That’s the reality. [There’s a] heightened sense of awareness.
[Police] are guaranteed to be getting some calls on public transportation. Every one of these things will be have to be looked at.’

There were also 400 Massachusetts National Guardsmen at the marathon to beef up the security.

‘This is a horrific day in Boston,’ Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement. ‘My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been injured.
‘Our focus is on making sure that the area around Copley Square is safe and secured. I am asking everyone to stay away from Copley Square and let the first responders do their jobs.’
Obama praised the first responders for acting ‘heroically’ as he addressed the nation just after 6pm.
‘Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers,’ he said. ‘We don‘t yet have all the answers but we do know local people have been wounded, some gravely.
‘We still do not know who did this or why and people should not jump to conclusions before we have the facts,’ he added.

Highs and lows of using Flickr
paulgalbraith.com/blog/highs-lows-using-flickr
Flickr users can often spend a great deal of time on the site, uploading their own images, adding descriptions, tags and other meta data. Not only that, they also comment on and make favourites of other images. When an account is deleted it’s not just the images that are gone (these should be backed up elsewhere), but it’s all the other data and contacts that have been built up over time that’s lost.
I don’t want to sound too negative, Flickr can be a great site for most of the people that use it, myself included. There just needs to be a few changes to safeguard the time and effort many of us put into our Flickr accounts.

The battle of the sexes has raged for centuries and will likely never end.
But at least now, scientific research can shed light on some of the biological and physiological differences between men and women.
The British Psychological Society Annual Conference, held last month, highlighted some of the differences in cognitive abilities between sexes.

For instance, studies show that men have better spatial awareness skills, whereas women are stronger with verbal fluency and greater memory for objects.
With these traits generally replicated across cultures and nations, it indicates a biological origin in nature.
Diane Halpern, a professor of psychology at Claremont McKenna College in California, spoke at the London-based conference, hoping to correct the belief popularised in the 1980s that men and women’s brains are wired almost identically, and it is culture and nature that causes difference.

…Time to move on? Staying in a job you hate is bad for you AND your employer – and the reward for ‘loyalty’ is illness
…People love multitasking – but sadly BOTH sexes are terrible at it, not just men
During her speech, as reported by Live Science, she said: ‘We do socialise our boys and girls differently, but the contribution of biology is not zero.’
Some key differences between men and women believed to be biological in nature include men having a stronger ability to think of objects in 3D, helping them to navigate. This difference has even been spotted in studies involving babies of only three months old.
However women are ‘better at remembering where things are’ and are more likely to navigate via landmarks rather than the generally male trait of navigating by sense of direction.

.
.
Some perceived differences between the sexes are down to cultural pressure – for instance, Halpern said, there is a belief that men are better at mathematical problems and women are better at reading and writing, but these differences tend to fade in more gender-equal societies.
There is also widespread criticism about standardised testing being biased towards one sex or the other.
If gender is not an issue for society anymore, the question was posed: Why are 90 per cent of company managers male, and 90 per cent of secretaries female?
Halpern said that while women do most of the ‘caretaking’ jobs, such as childraising or helping the elderly, the inequality will remain. But she added that, on the other side, society was losing many talented men on the domestic, caregiving front.
She added: ‘We can’t have equality in work, if we don’t have equality in the home.’

The thought of tossing one’s cap in the air and being surrounded by a sea of fellow graduates is a scene many have envisioned since their adolescence. As children, most couldn’t stand the thought of waiting until they could venture into the “real world,” and for many college seniors, and soon-to-be graduates, the time has come for them to do just that.
Stepping into the “real world” is an exciting experience, yet it may also be slightly daunting. It is up to the student to make the most of each event, and not get overwhelmed by new experiences.
“The biggest thing I’m worried about in relation to entering the workforce is all of the adjusting I will have to do,” said senior Matty Budesa.
Adjusting to the workweek, and giving up the relaxed schedule of college classes may not seem to be the most ideal, but it is important to stay efficient and timely with work.
Time management plays a big role with every new journey. Everyone’s heard it going into high school, followed by their step into college, and the same applies for the working world. Time management is key to staying on top of work, and can prevent stress.
“Obviously, a college lifestyle where you can some days sleep in until 10:00 a.m. or so is quite different from dressing professionally and being at work by 9:00 a.m. every morning,” said Budesa. “While I think I’m prepared skills-wise, I definitely worry about the schedule adjustments and potential lack of free time.”
Mistakes will be made, whether directly related to your career, or life in general. When situations occur, it is crucial to not let errors beat you down.
Successful Harry Potter novelist J.K. Rowling, who is the first writer to make billion, is a prime example. Rowling hit a few roadblocks along her journey.
Prior to unleashing the world of Harry Potter to the public, and while she was still in the premiere writing stages, Rowling opened up about being diagnosed with clinical depression and contemplating suicide in an interview with The New Yorker. The idea of the soul-sucking dementors within the Harry Potter series actually came from her illnesses. Rowling also signed up for welfare due to her poor economic status.
In an advice column for new grads published by Forbes Magazine, Rowling stated that failure become the foundation of her success.
“Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged,” said Rowling. “And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”
Throughout the journey new grads are about to take, it is important to remember that they mail fail, but that failure doesn’t define them.
Although having a career may trigger thoughts of “work and no play,” happiness and fun is something to always keep on the mind throughout life’s endeavors.
“One thing that I’ve kept in mind throughout college and hope to continue with is a motto of ‘staying fun,’ which seems kind of cliché, but overall I don’t want to stop having fun just because I’ve moved to the professional world,” said Budesa. “I also realistically know that it will be a different type of environment, but I think as long as I remember this motto I can maintain some sanity and stay young at heart for a bit longer.”
